Silver one-third siliqua Anonymous coinage for dedication of Constantinople in 330 AD. Silver one-third siliqua (0.99 gm). Constantinople, 330 AD. No legend, helmeted, draped bust of Roma left, seen from front / Large letter P, fine border of dots on both sides. Simon Bendall, “Anonymous Silver,” RN 158, 2002, no. 3 (one specimen). Bust variety of Cohen Vol. VII, p. 327, 3 (50 Fr.). Apparently the second recorded specimen with Roma facing left. Extremely well struck for this issue. Mint state. This series, probably produced for distribution at the dedication of Constantinople on 11 May 330, comprised two main types, helmeted or diademed bust of Constantinopolis with K on reverse, and helmeted bust of Roma with P (rho) on reverse. The bust of Roma normally faces right; the present specimen with bust left is a rare variant, known to Bendall in only a single specimen. © 2006 Gemini, LLC | Email: info@geminiauction.com ...
