                    Agrippina Jr. sestertius, 20 known!

     Agrippina Jr. Æ Sestertius - Draped bust - RIC(Claudius) 103(R3);
     BMC 3. Obverse legend: AGRIPPINA AVG GERMANICI F CAESAR[IS A]VG,
     draped bust right. This full weight example (26.20gm.) has no
     trace of a reverse strike, or any ancient smoothing. Perhaps the
     reverses of this special issue were not struck at times. If these
     were presentation pieces for Balkan frontier officials this is
     more likely. VF, the reverse not struck, dark patina, good style
     dies, some legend not struck, minor rim cut.

     The find spot in the Balkans connects this issue with the other
     AEs issued from the Balkan mint at the end of the reign of
     Claudius. RIC 103 note says Four examples in Berlin, (three from
     the same obverse die); rev. dies all different, all found in
     Moesia-Thrace); a fifth in Sofia Museum; another in Vienna with
     obverse AGRIPPINAE. . . and reverse obliterated.

     Seven examples were known to Von Kaenel Examples in recent
     auctions: Kovacs c. 94; Numismatik Lanz 5/95, #506; Munz Zentrum
     9/96 #277, Triton I, #1320, CNG46 #1167, M&M/Vecchi/Baldwins
     12/98; this example suggest a population of at least 15 examples.

     David Sear values S657, a variety of this coin, at 7,500 pounds
     (in VF), more than any other sestertius except Britannicus or
     Domitia.
