Unpublished type combining obverse and reverses of RIC (Gaius) 55 / 33. Near F, nicely centered on a fairly full flan, flan split, river patina. Rome Mint's first portrait sestertius honors the sisters of this mad emperor. Suetonius notes of Caligula, ''It was his habit to commit incest with each of his three sisters and, at large banquets, when his wife reclined above him, placed them all in turn below him.'' This apparently unique sestertius is struck on a flan typical for the reign. The obverse has the bust of the emperor's deceased mother. His living sisters, in the guise of goddesses, occupy the reverse. Both types were struck during the first year of the reign of this emperor. This may be considered a hybrid or mule. Alternatively, this may be considered an alternate reverse for the mother of the three sisters. For comparison, consider the denarii of Domitian and Domitia with the reverse of the boy (their son). The coins of Domitian are sometimes considered simply mules of the coins of the Augusta. However, the reverse ''works'' with this obverse as well. A puzzling coin.
