The following Spring, he was faced with discontent of the Goths under their King, Kniva, who wanted their payoff from Rome, which had been promised by Trebonianus Gallus, to be increased. Aemilian promptly went on the offensive, first killing the Goths under his jurisdiction, then boldly crossing the River Danube, and his early success prompted his soldiers to proclaim him Augustus. This inspired him to launch an invasion of Italy, and the strength of his army carried him to within 20 miles of Rome. Trebonianus Gallus and Volusian had the Senate declare him a public enemy, but their legions, recognizing the strength of Aemilian's army, revolted and put Gallus and Volusian to death. Aemilian's reign ended almost as soon as it began, because Valerian and his army, summoned earlier by Gallus, and superior even to Aemilian's, was approaching Rome, and had proclaimed Valerian their Emperor. Once Aemilian's army recognized their dilemma, they resolved it by executing him, proving once again that to live by the sword is to die by the sword.
