Hyrcanus II Unusual Inscription, Biblical/Judean The inscription on this particular group of coins carries the name YONATAN as opposed to the YEHONATAN inscription on the coins of Alexander Jannaeus. Some believe this is merely a shortened version of Jannaeus's name. However, the clearly delineated style of the types with the shortened name, and the absolute dearth of other YEHONATAN coins with the shortened version of the name, seems to suggest that these are coins struck by a different ruler, most logically Hyrcanus II, although his Hebrew name is not known from any ancient sources. Hyrcanus II, 67 and 63-40 BC, prutah of 16.1 mm, 1.93 grams. Obverse: Ancient Hebrew, quite clearly legible but in an unusual style of script. Reverse: Double cornucopias, pomegranate between. Reference: Hendin 479 variety, Treasury S42 variety.
