Gemini III, January 9th, 2007 Lot # 181Estimate: US$2000 Magnesia on the Meander, Themistocles. Ca. 465–460/50 BC. Silver tetartemorion (0.20 gm). Bearded male head right (Themistocles?), wearing wreath or taenia / Eagle flying left, AP monogram(?) below, all in incuse square with linear border. Cahn and Mannsperger, NC 1991, p. 199, pl. 44, 1–2 = SNG Tubingen 2922 (same dies). Extremely rare: possibly only the second known specimen, and surely the finest. Very fine/ extremely fine. Cahn and Mannsperger, describing the poorly preserved specimen in Tubingen, thought that the head on the obverse might be helmeted. This better example seems to depict a wreathed head (cf. NC 1988, pl. 2, 8 and A), with his hair in krobylos. The style is later and finer than the style of the fractions published in an earlier article by Cahn and Gerin in NC 1988. © 2006 Gemini, LLC | Email: info@geminiauction.com ...
