91, Lot: 24. EUBOEA, Karystos. Circa 197-146 BC. Æ 17mm (4.06 gm). Estimate $150. Sold for 99. EUBOEA, Karystos. Circa 197-146 BC. Æ 17mm (4.06 gm). Head of Zeus right Eagle standing right with wings open. Cf. BCD 592; cf. BMC Central Greece pg. 103, 22; cf. SNG Copenhagen 427. Ex BCD Collection. Although the references all describe this head as laureate, the photographed specimens in BMC and SNG Cop are so worn as to make such an attribution less than certain. While the BCD example appears to be laureate, the absence of the typical wreath ties, also the case with our specimen, suggests the headwear is a taenia, and thus a reworking of the earlier Poseidon head.
