Description Ancient Egyptian Gold Octodrachm of Ptolemy II and His Sister/Wife, Arsinoe II! [Image] Ptolemy II Philadelphos. 285-246 B.C. The second of the Ptolemys, Philadelphos (or "brother lover") succeeded his father Ptolemy I (a general of Alexander the Great) in 285 B.C. as ruler of Egypt. He promptly defied his dead parents, Ptolemy I and Queen Berenike and began setting up his administration. One of his first acts was to marry his sister Arsinoe II, an unusual thing to do in terms of Greek sensibility but not that unusual for the Pharaohs. The Ptolemys were happy to continue this tradition, courting their siblings for several generations. Arsinoe was known for her courage and ambition and often assisted her brother/husband in his foreign affairs. Upon her sudden death in 269 B.C., Ptolemy II established a state cult in her honor and struck coins with her likeness. Extremely Fine. 27.9 grams. A splendid gold coin of ancient Egypt with an obverse portrait of Arsinoe II. Very Scarce. NO RESERVE!!!
