Phialea-Phigaleia was situated on the mountainous south-west border of Arcadia, near Messenia. Close by was the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae, whose marbles were stripped by 19th century explorers and sold to museums and private collectors in Europe.In Phigalia itself was a cave with a wooden statue of the "Black Demeter" sitting on a rock. She had the head of a horse surrounded by serpents.
