Obverse Bust with 3 braids r. It was minted by the Carnutes tribe which occupied the area around modern day Beauce, France. Monnaies II-, De La Tour 6188. Weight is 2.2 grams and size is 14mm. * Relatively unknown outside Europe, and France in particular, the Celtic coinage of Gaul – nowadays roughly the countries of France, Belgium and Germany west of the Rhine – is one of the most fascinating and attractive series you can collect, with a very wide variety of types, and prices are not high considering their relative rarity, especially outside the borders of France, so they can be a good investment as well. * Briefly, from about 100 BC to the time of Christ, many of the numerous individual tribes in Gaul each produced its own coins, until the spread of Roman influence and conquest forced the adoption of the Roman coinage system. Prior to this time the Celtic tribes used a system of barter. After initial contact with the Romans they came in contact with the Roman coinage and decided to make coinage of their own. * Celtic coins were struck in gold, silver and bronze, though not every tribe struck all three. Cast coins were produced as well, using a very high-tin alloy called potin. It is generally accepted that potin coins have been produced in quantity only by the Gallic tribes, so when you have some in your collection you have something really unusual. * For the serious collector with a scholarly outlook, Celtic coins provide a fascinating field of study. Over 125 different Celtic tribes existed and most produced coinage, many are quite rare, others more common, but none are as common as Roman or Greek coins. They were produced in very limited quantity as each tribe made their own coinage and each coin was hand struck. There are many interesting designs to be found on Celtic coins. Many of the more common are warriors, horses, wild boars and geometric patterns. * No ancient collection is complete without a series of Celtic potins. Gaul was an integral part of Roman history. It starts with Julius Caesar and his Gallic Wars, chronicled in the book Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War. The Gaulic Celtic tribes gave the Romans trouble for nearly 100 years until they were finally conquered. The history of Gaul continues well into the later part of the Roman Empire figuring prominently and producing such emperors as Postumus and mints such as Lugdunum. * The Romans also minted a number of issues of coinage meant for circulation in the new province of Gaul. The two most famous pieces being dual portrait pieces of Julius Caesar and Augustus. The first has back-to-back portraits of Julius Caesar and the young Octavian on the obverse and a galley on the reverse. The other, more well known piece, has back-to-back portraits of Augustus and Agrippa and features a crocodile chained to a palm tree on the reverse. Both coins are scarce and are many times found as cut halves as small change was in short supply on the frontier. * All of the above mentioned coins can be found in my auctions or on my web site at www.ancientimports.com. I have very good contacts in France who supply me with a variety of Celtic coins. If you have been looking for a coinage to accent your collection of Roman coins this is it. Also, if you are interested in starting a collection of Gaulic and Celtic coinage please contact me and I would be glad to help you get going with coins and attribution works such as the standard De La Tour. I currently have potins of about 30 different tribes and many cast bronzes and silver units in stock so if you don’t see what you are looking for please feel free to contact me!
