Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex, KG, ca. 1485–1540. Chief minister of Henry VIII from 1534 to 1540, and a strong and powerful proponent of the English Reformation. Executed on 28th July 1540 after Henry's marriage to Anna of Cleves failed.
