Anchialus AE25 Moushmov 2909 of Maximinus I
Maximinus I AE25 of Anchialus. Laureate head right / AGCIALEWN, three female figures (Demeter, Persephone & Hecate?), wearing long dresses, standing together.
Lot No.2592. Fine and rare.
$ 250.
Moushmov calls them the Three Graces standing dressed, but they are more likely Demeter, Persephone, and Hecate. Hecate figures in the story of Persephone's abduction by Hades, as the one who hears Persephone's cries and mediates the outcome by which Persephone spends alternate six month seasonal cycles in the underworld and with her mother Demeter.
Maximius I the Thracian (or Maximius Thrax) was a great general who was proclaimed emperor in 235 AD. He overthrew Severus Alexander, but was declared public enemy by the Senate and was killed by his own troops in 238 AD.
