Aemilan was a native of Mauretania and governor of Moesia under Trebonianus Gallus, when he was declared emperor by his troops after a big victory against the Goths. Volusian and Gallus' troops murdered the reigning emperors. Only three months later, Aemilian was murdered in turn, leaving Valerian I in power, and only a small number of rare coin types.
